Expressing possessions

As a second language learner, having the ability to express possessions is basically important since we need to you it on daily basis. There are numerous ways in which we can use to say that something belongs to somebody. When it comes to expressing possession, the verb " have/has" is no doubt for the English learners at beginner levels. This is very basic. You can advance your vocabulary by using the following alternatives. 

Have/has

  • I have a computer.
  • She has an expensive car.
  • They have a large farm.
  • Roza has 5 dogs.

Belong to (Something belong to somebody.)

  • That expensive car belongs to her.
  • This computer belongs to me.
  • Those apartments belong to Mrs.Theary.

Own

  • Elon musk owns Tesla company.
  • BDM owns bdmclass website.
  • They own a lot of farms.

Possess

  • Elon musk possesses Space X company
  • BDM possesses three YouTube channels.
  • They possess a farm and hundreds of animals.

Possessive pronouns

A possessive pronoun is used in place of a possessive adjective to avoid repetition.

I – my - mine

We – our - ours

They – their - theirs

He – his – his

She – her - hers

It – its – its

  • This is my car and that is yours. (your car)
  • His house is from the school but hers is near. (her house)
  • Our class is small but theirs is large. (their class)
  • That is your pen and this is his. ( his pen)

Possessive “ s”

Possessive “s” is used when there two nouns together and we want to make the second noun belongs to the first one. Look at the form below.

Noun A’s Noun B (Noun B belongs to Noun A.)

Singular and irregular nouns

  • Theary’s handwriting is amazing. (Handwriting that belongs to Theary.)
  • Roza’s car is a rip-off. (The car that belongs to Roza.)
  • Tiger’s claws are sharp and massive. (The claws that belong to the tiger.)
  • This computer’s RAM is 16 Gigabytes.
  • Children’s education is crucial in most countries.

Plural regular noun

Generally, to form a plural noun, we simply add –s, -es or –ies to a singular noun. In this case, we simply add just and apostrophe “ ” to make a possession.
