Present & Past Passive Voice

 


There are two main voices which are active voice and passive voice. In active voice the action does the action while in passive voice the subject receives the action. When are a few points that we have to remember when using a passive voice. The doer of the action is unknow, the doer of the action is not necessary, the subject in passive voice receive the action. Present Passive voice is formed by using verb to be ( am, is, are) plus past participles.

Usage

  • We do not know the doer of an action
  • We don’t want to mention the doer of an action
  • In passive voice the subject receives the action
Present Passive Voices

Present Simple Passive Voice : Present Simple passive voice is basically used to talk about facts and habits and it is formed by using Sub + am/is/are + V3…….(by)………..

Example
1. Animals are killed for food every day.
2. Many tropical fruits are grown in Asia.
3. This souvenir is made of wood.
4. Students are taught at school.
5. Crops are grown by the farmers.

Negative: Sub + am/is/are + not+ V3…….(by)………..

Examples

1. This souvenir isn’t made of wood.
2.Students aren’t taught in the class now.
3. Breakfast isn’t cooked by me every morning.
4. Pets are not fed every three days.
5. Plane aren't manufactured in Cambodia.

Yes/ No: Am/is/are + sub + V3…………?
Examples

1. Is this souvenir made of wood?
2. Are students taught online now?
3. Is breakfast cooked by your mom?
4. Is rice grown a lot in Battambang Province? 
5. Are cakes made of flour?

Present Continuous Passive Voice
Present continuous passive voice is used to talk about something that is being done to at the time of speaking. It is formed by using the sub + am/is/are + being + past participle ...(by)... Please remember that the subject must be a person, an animal or a thing that receive the action not doing the action.

Example
1. Many tall buildings are being built in the middle of Phnom Penh city.
2. Different brand of electric vehicles are being manufactured by different factories around the world.
3. More and more trees are being cut down every single day.
4. A lot of different types of flowers are being planted in my garden.
5. Hundred of tourist are being attracted to visit Angkor Wat temple. 

Present Perfect Passive Voice
Present Perfect Passive Voice is used to describe something that was done to at unknow time in the past and shows the result in the present. It if formed by using sub + have/has + been + past participle...(by)....

Example
1. Hundreds of emails have been sent to the customers today.
2. Your website has been approved into Google AdSense program. 
3. He has been warned multiple times not to enter that area. 
4. All conditional lessons have been posted on this website.
5. Your coffee has already been made. You can go and take it.

Past Passive Voices

Past Simple Passive Voice

Positive: Sub + was/were + V3…….(by)………..

Examples

1. Dinner was prepared by me yesterday.  
2. A lot of trees were cut down last year.
3. Students weren’t taught online last month.
4. The cars weren’t made in Japan.
5. These shoes were bought by me last week.
6. This book was used by her.

Negative: Sub + was/were + not+ V3…….(by)………..

1. Dinner wasn’t prepared by me yesterday.  
2. A lot of trees weren’t cut down last year.
3. Students weren’t taught online last month.
4. The cars weren’t made in Japan.
5. These shoes weren’t bought by me last week.
6. This book wasn’t used by her.

Yes/No: Was/were + sub + V3……(by)……?

1. Was dinner prepared by you yesterday?
2. Were a lot of trees cut down last year?
3. Was this book used be her last week?
4. Were students taught online last month? 

Past Continuous Passive Voice
It is used to talk about the something that was being done an action to at a specific time in the past. It is formed by using sub + was/were + being + past participle....

Examples
1. Homework was being done my sister at 10 last night.
2. A lot of illegal workers were being arrested by the police.
3. This time yesterday, the class was being cleaned up by the students.
4. When I arrived home, dinner was being prepared by my mom.
5. My car was being fixed yesterday morning. 

Future Simple Passive Voice  
It is used to talk about something that done an action to in the future and it is formed by using sub + will + be + past participle ....(by).....

Example
1. Most chronic diseases will be healed by doctors in the future.
2. More scientists will be sent to Mars to recreate the environment by Elonk Musk.
3. A lot of more grammar lessons will be posted on this website.
4. Flying cars will be sold to the public in the near future.
5. A lot of jobs will be performed by AI. 
Note:
"by" is used when we want to mention the doer of the action.
