Adverbs of Manner

There are different types of adverbs such as an adverb of frequency, sentence adverb, adverb of degree and an adverb of manner is essentially important when it comes to describing how a person does something. An adverb of manner is basically formed by adding -ly to an adjective and it is generally placed after the action verb in a sentence but when it is put right before the verb it gives stronger emphasis to the verb. This article will discuss in detail about the adverbs of manner.

Use  

An adverb of manner is used as the followings: 

  • To tell how a person does something.
  • To modify a verb
  • To tell how something is done.
  • To modify an adjective

Forming adverbs of manner

To form an adverb of manner, we basically add "-ly" to an adjective. There are 3 main rules to remember when forming an adverb of manner.

Rule 1: If an adjective ends in a consonant + y, we change "y" to "-ily". See the following examples.

Busy – busily 

1. He works busily in his office every day.  

Lazy – lazily

2. Some students study lazily in the class. 

Noisy – noisily

3. My neighbors sing noisily every evening.  

Hungry – hungrily

4. My dog eats hungrily his food. 

Crazy - crazily

5. A drunk man was driving crazily on a busy street yesterday.

Rule 2: Add “-ly” to the adjectives that don’t follow rule 1. 

Slow – slowly

1. He drives slowly. 

Beautiful – beautifully

2. She sings this song beautifully. 

Quiet – quietly

3. Students listen to the teacher quietly. 

Smooth – smoothly

4.We finished this project smoothly/badly. 

Careful - carefully

5. Teachers always explain the students carefully.

Rule 3: Irregular Adverbs

  • Fast – fast (He drives fast.) 
  • Early – early (You come early today.) 
  • Late – late ( But yesterday you came late.) 
  • Hard – hard (You always work hard.) 
  • Good – well (Now you can speak English well.) 

Positions

An adverb of manner is generally placed after the verb in a sentence.

Sub + Verb + Adv-manner……….

Example

  • Kids are playing in the rain happily at the moment.
  • People in the city work busily every day.
  • She sings beautifully for most of the song.
  • They can speak English and Khmer fluently.
  • Native speakers always speak fast.

Giving Emphasis

To communicate stronger feeling or give emphasis to the adverb, we just move the adverb of manner to place before the verb.

Sub + adverb of manner + verb ...........

Example

  • I strongly agree with your decision.
  • He quickly grabbed hip pen when it fell.
  • She confidently put her hand up and answer the teacher's question.

Adjective V.s Adverb of manner

  • Careful V.s carefully
  • She is a careful driver. 
  • She carefully drives. 
  • She drives carefully.

Adjective 

An adjective is used after verb to be ( am/is/are/was/were) to modify :

  • a noun. 
  • an adverb of manner

Modify a verb

Quick/quickly

- They are __quick__ workers. They work ____quickly_____.

Lazy/lazily

- Some students study __lazily__ because they are__ lazy__.

Hungry/hungrily

- That dog is very __hungry___. He is eating his food __hungrily__.

2. Quick – quickly

3. Fast – fast

4. Lazy – lazily

- Don’t call her now. She works …busily…. in her office. 

6. Lucky – luckily

- He __luckily__ won the game. 

7. Beautiful – beautifully

- She sings that song…beautifully…..

8. Terrible – terribly

- The storm __terribly__ destroyed a lot of houses. 

9. Horrible – horribly

- That food is __horrible__ I don’t want to eat. 

10. Careless – carelessly

- I don’t want to go with her. She is a ___careless____ driver. 

11. Patient – patiently

I wait for her ----patiently------ for three hours now.

12. Calm – calmly

13. Violent – violently

Tsunami ----violently----damages everything on its way.
